WEST LAFAYATTE, Ind. - In front of a boisterous Boilermaker crowd, No. 23 Purdue opened the 2018 season with back-to-back sweeps over Wofford (0-2) and Bowling Green (0-2) at Holloway Gymnasium on Friday. The Boilermakers forced their opponents to a combined 44 errors to best the Terriers 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 and the Falcons 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 on the first day of the Reamer Club Premier
Purdue's success was driven by a balanced cohesion between its veteran and rookie members and the unwavering support that filled Holloway on opening day.
The first match saw senior Sherridan Atkinson fuel the Boilermakers against Wofford with her first career double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs. Redshirt junior Shavona Cuttino and sophomore Julianna Reisinger complimented Atkinson's offense with a match-high .500 hitting percentage and a match-best four service aces, respectively.
Redshirt freshman Hayley Bush stepped into the starting setter role with poise as she delivered a match-high 32 assists. Veteran libero Brooke Peters protected the back row with 17 digs.
Against the Falcons, the Boilermakers' offense was guided by Caitlyn Newton. Finding a rhythm on the outside, the sophomore recorded a match-high 12 kills with only three errors. Defensively, Purdue utilized a group effort to limit Bowling Green to a .057 attack percentage. Providing defense up the middle, redshirt junior Blake Mohler tallied a match-high five assisted blocks to go along with her six kills. Guarding the back row were Peters, Bush and freshman Marissa Hornung, who each registered double-digit dig performances. Peters topped the trio with 11 digs, while Bush and Hornung dished out 10 digs each.
The Boilermakers are set to conclude the Reamer Club Premier with a matchup against Tulsa (2-0) on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Holloway Gymnasium. Both teams are undefeated and will battle for the inaugural title of the Reamer Club Premier.
