WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The track & field teams head to the Drake Relays this weekend for their final test before the Big Ten Championships. The Boilermakers will send 44 student-athletes with 25 women and 19 men. The majority of the meet, which runs all week, is Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The 11th-ranked women return winners of four events from last year's Drake Relays. Senior Symone Black was the winner of the 400-meter hurdles, while the Boilermakers won the 4x200-, 4x400- and 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay. They also had the best 4x100-meter relay time in prelims, but did not compete in the rainy finals. Senior Devynne Charlton, who was part of the winning shuttle hurdle relay team, will again compete in the special section of the 100-meter hurdles. A year ago, she finished fifth in the event against the best in the world.
On the men's side, the 26th-ranked Boilermakers are led by several newcomers to the Relays. Sophomore Ashmon Lucas is the national leader in the discus and looks to build on his best throw of 62.91 meters (206-5). Freshman Rahman Minor is 10th in the country in the high jump, while redshirt freshman Jalil Brewer is 13th nationally in the shot put. Sophomore Waseem Williams is 19th in the country in the 100-meter dash and 21st at 200 meters. All four will compete at Drake for the first time as collegians. Senior Justin Veteto leads the veterans into the meet with his No. 8 time in the country in the 110-meter hurdles.
