World University Games: Official FISU / Taipei 2017 / Team USA /// USA Diving
INDIANAPOLIS - Purdue's Joe Cifelli has been selected to represent the United States in 1-meter diving at the 2017 World University Games this summer in Taipei, Taiwan.
Cifelli was among the 13 student-athletes selected for USA Diving's roster. The World University Games are set for August 19 to 30 in Taiwan, with the diving events scheduled for August 20 to 27.
Purdue men's basketball will also be in Taipei this summer as Team USA's official entry in the WUG basketball tournament.
Cifelli was an All-American on 1-meter this season, finishing sixth in the event at the NCAA Championships in March. He also took seventh on 1-meter at the USA Diving Winter Nationals in December and fifth at the Big Ten Championships in February. The rising junior was a second team All-Big Ten honoree in 2016 after finishing as the runner-up on 1-meter at the conference championship meet.
Of the 13 divers selected to represent the U.S., the University of Miami's Briadam Herrera and Ohio State's Christopher Law are also scheduled to compete on 1-meter in Taipei.
Cifelli's Purdue teammates Steele Johnson and Brandon Loschiavo are also competing internationally this summer at the FINA World Championships (July 14-22) in Budapest, Hungary. Johnson will compete individually on 1-meter and 3-meter and with Loschiavo in synchronized 10-meter. Most athletes opt not to compete at both the World Championships and World University Games during the same summer.
Cifelli joins MacKenzie Tweardy (2013), Danny Cox (2011), David Colturi (2009), Kara Cook (2009) and Ashley Karnes (2009) as Purdue divers to be selected for the World University Games. Karnes won bronze on 1-meter at the 2009 WUG in Belgrade, Serbia.
Additionally, Purdue swimmers Marat Amaltdinov (Russia) and Nika Karlina Petric (Slovenia) represented their countries at the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju City, South Korea.
USA Diving's 2017 roster features World University Games veterans Olivia Rosendahl (Northwestern) and Herrera, who both medaled at the 2015 WUG. Herrera won a bronze medal on 1-meter at the 2015 Games and will dive both 1-meter and 3-meter in2017. Rosendahl will dive in the individual platform and 3-meter events in 2017 after winning bronze in synchronized 3-meter two years ago.
Four of the World University Games team members also will compete at the FINA World Championships in July. David Dinsmore (University of Miami) will compete on platform at both the World Championships and World University Games. Brooke Schultz (incoming freshman at Arkansas) will dive 3-meter at both events and Alison Gibson (Texas) will dive 1-meter at both meets. Herrera made the World Championships team in mixed synchronized 3-meter.
Held every two years, the World University Games consists of 22 sports with participation from student-athletes from around the world.
