CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Purdue men's golf team fell one spot to seventh at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational after 36 holes. The Boilermakers recorded a 2-over par 290 and sits just seven shots out of third place.
The Boilermakers' 36-hole total of 1-under par 575 (285-290) trails leaders South Carolina and Mississippi by 10 shots as the Gamecocks and Rebels lead at 11-under par 565. North Carolina State is third at 8-under par 568, Georgia State is fourth at 6-under par 570 and Kentucky and Missouri are tied for fifth at 2-under par 574.
Purdue leads national powers and top-40 programs Virginia (even), Auburn (+1) and Kansas (+2) entering tomorrow's final round.
Purdue sizzled on the front nine, starting on hole No. 1, posting a combined score of 10-under par and surging to the lead after nine holes. However, the Boilermakers played the back nine in a combined 14-over par to fall to seventh. Fernando Barco secured two late birdies on the back nine to right the ship and move Purdue up in the standings late in the round.
Barco and Jarle Volden posted identical rounds of even-par 72 and are tied for 11th at 2-under par 142 (70-72). Barco was 2-under par through 11 holes, played the next four holes in 4-over par, then birdied Nos. 16 and 17 for his even-par round. The even-par round of 72 was his sixth straight round of even-par or better, the third-longest streak for a Purdue player since the 2001-02 season.
Volden, meanwhile, continues to play the best golf of his career with his fifth round of even-par or better in his last six rounds. Volden was 4-under par through 11 holes, before scuffling some on the back nine. However, Volden recorded his second eagle of the tournament and sixth of the year, on the front nine and is sixth in the tournament field in par-5 scoring at 5-under par.
Austin Eoff and Brian Carlson each posted scores of 1-over par 73 to round out Purdue's scoring unit Monday. Carlson is tied for 22nd at even-par 144 (71-73), while Eoff is tied for 48th at 3-over par 147 (74-73). Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 62nd at 6-over par 150 (76-74).
Purdue will be paired with Virginia and Auburn in tomorrow's final round, teeing off hole No. 10, beginning at 8 a.m. ET.
