WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2014 Journal and Courier Small School Player of the Year, outfielder/first baseman Madison Douglass had a short trip to college softball at Purdue, hailing from just down the road in Frankfort, Indiana.
Her offensive stats jump off the page, batting .559 and reaching base in 70 percent of her plate appearances as a sophomore and hitting at a .610 clip with a .775 on-base percentage her junior season.
The three-time Hoosier Heartland all-conference honoree says the best feeling at the plate is feeling mechanically sound. She calls her game confident and herself quiet, laid back and funny.
"Dougie is one of the strongest hitters I have ever seen," head coach Boo De Oliveira said. "She has serious power potential and also runs well. She will drive in a lot of runs for us this season. Defensively, she will compete in the outfield and at first base. With Dougie up to bat, Purdue stands to score a lot of runs. It has been fun seeing her step up as one of the leaders in the freshman class."
Douglass says her best non-athletic talent is giving good advice to other when they are struggling, which could come in handy for her teammates from time to time.
She looks up to All-American softball player and member of Team USA Lauren Chamberlain, who she says is very confident and inspirational, and also says her parents have helped make her who she is.
