CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- Event victories by Filip Bujoczek, Alex Clarke and Jinq En Phee highlighted day two action for the Purdue swimmers at the H2Okie Fall Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech.
Both Purdue teams are now in second place in the team scoring. The men (454.5 points) moved into second place among the eight-team field, leapfrogging Navy (443) on Friday. The women (654) will finish no worse than second in the team scoring and will enter the final day of competition 97 points behind the host Hokies (751).
Bujoczek (1:38.06) won the 200 freestyle, Clarke (4:19.67) was victorious in the 400 individual medley and Phee (1:01.34) touched first in the 100 breaststroke. The Purdue women were also victorious in the 200 medley relay (1:40.54) to open the Friday finals session, posting the eighth-fastest time in program history.
Led by Taite Kitchel's runner-up finish, the Purdue women dominated the 100 butterfly. The Boilermakers had six of the top seven finishers in the A final of the event, racking up 87 team points in the process. It was easily Purdue's most prolific scoring output in an individual event of the meet so far.
The Purdue men had three A finalists in both the 100 backstroke and 100 breast, accumulating 50 team points in both events in the process. Kiki Komlenic took third in the 100 back and Marat Amaltdinov did likewise in the 100 breast.
Kaersten Meitz finished as the runner-up in an A final for the second day in a row, finishing second in the 200 free. Along with the 100 fly, the Purdue women also earned 50-plus points in both the 100 breast and 200 free Friday.
Jackie Smailis improved on her third-fastest time in program history while finishing third in the A final of the 100 back. She also swam the leadoff backstroke leg on the victorious 200 medley relay. The Purdue women finished first and third in the first relay event of the day. Kitchel and Phee joined Smailis as Boilermakers that were the team's top finisher in an individual event while also contributing to the relay win.
Erik Juliusson (100 back, 100 fly) and Amaltdinov (100 breast, 400 IM) both scored in two individual events for the Purdue men Friday. Breanna Robinson (100 back, 100 fly) did likewise for the women.
Cady Farlow (100 breast), Hanna House (100 back), Kitchel (100 back) and Phee (100 breast) all moved up on the program's all-time top-10 lists with their career-best times Friday.
The Purdue men had four of the top 11 finishers in both the 100 back and 100 breast.
Natalie Mudd (100 back), Alex Toetz (100 fly) and Joe Young (100 back) all won a C final Friday.
Action concludes Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
