WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For the second time this season, the men's tennis team will play at home in a weekend tournament. The Old Gold & Black Classic begins Friday at the Schwartz Tennis Center and will run through Monday. The Boilermakers previously hosted 140 players in late September during the Purdue Fall Invite; this tournament, however, is smaller in size, featuring players from only two other schools, Butler and IUPUI.
Matt Bouggy, Renan Hanayama and Dominik Sochurek are scheduled to compete for Purdue along with one other teammate. The chosen four a looking to provide head coach Pawel Gajdzik more consistent play than the rest of the squad did a weekend ago.
The Boilermakers started off strong at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Knoxville Tennessee, winning 4 of its 6 singles matches and its only doubles competition on day one. Ricky Medinilla defeated Sean Donohue of Louisville 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and Jorge Alfonzo of Tennesee Tech 6-2, 6-3 in the second. Benjamin Ugarte also won his first two matches in straight sets, beating Sunay Bhat of Tennessee 6-2, 6-1 and Geroge Wong of Lipscomd 6-2, 6-0. However, all four in action would be eliminated on day two of the tournament - Athell Bennett and Lucas Dages in the consolation draw.
Competition starts Friday at 6 p.m. ET and can be viewed via the new live stream feature. Click the link at the top of this page for free access during the entire tournament.
