WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue baseball's annual Old Gold & Black Series brings the program's full fall practice schedule to a close this week. The three-game intrasquad features games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday that are open to the public at Alexander Field.
Team rosters were being finalized Wednesday. Last year, the Black Team won five of the final six games to take the nine-game series 6-3. The new coaching staff opted to shift the Old Gold & Black Series to a more traditional three-game set, which mirrors the three-game weekend series the Boilermakers play throughout the year and specifically in Big Ten play. It also opened up more practice time for organized team scrimmages this month.
PurdueSports.com will be offering live coverage via GameTracker live stats as well as postgame recaps throughout the series. All games are scheduled to be standard nine-inning contests and played under the same rule set as regular-season college baseball. However, some re-entries may be allowed with substitutions.
Evan Kennedy, Tanner Andrews and Evan Warden were among the top performers for the victorious Black Team last year. Kennedy led the way with an 8-for-21 showing at the plate, posting a .606 on-base percentage after drawing 12 free passes (10 walks, 2 HBP) to go along with his five extra-base hits. He also drove in seven runs and scored eight times. Warden also had had eight hits and eight runs scored in his first taste of game action at Alexander Field. He redshirted in the spring to fulfill his transfer-year requirement after helping Morehead State qualify for the 2015 NCAA Tournament. This summer, Kennedy and Warden were among the top players for the new Lafayette Aviators of the Prospect League.
Andrews surrendered just one extra-base hit over 9 1/3 innings of two-run ball for the Black Team in the 2015 Series. The junior missed a few weeks of practice this fall due after getting hit by a line drive, but was able to return to the mound recently.
Among players on the current fall roster, Harry Shipley (10-for-28, 3 2B, 4 RBI, 5 BB), Jacson McGowan (6-for-17, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 5 R) and Hunter Hollis (4 App, 9 IP, 2 ER, BB, 4 K) were the top performers for the Gold Team a year ago. McGowan has been seeing time on the mound this fall and could be a weapon for Purdue in the bullpen as well this season.
