SOUTH BEND, Ind. --
Emma Benner led the women's cross country team to a 12th-place finish at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday. The men's team was paced by Jaret Carpenter and finished 16th as a team. Benner finished 13th in the women's 5,000-meter race, while Carpenter was 44th in the men's 5-mile.

Benner had Purdue's highest individual result at the meet, beating Hope Schmelzle's 14th-place finish from last year by one spot and. Benner's time of 16:41.9 was also 12.1 seconds better than Schmelzle's from last year, which was a Boilermaker-best at the meet. Benner's time is the fastest 5k by a Boilermaker since 2008 when Kristin Phillips 16:39.9. Her time is the sixth-fastest 5k in program history in cross country, while four of top times were run in 1983.

Kiara McIntosh had a huge day for the Purdue women as well. The senior ran a personal best of 16:48.9, which is the second-fastest ever by a Boilermaker at the meet. Her time is the seventh fastest in program history. Mary Abramson was the third finisher for Purdue Friday. She ran a time of 17:18.3. Jenna Halderman and Alyssa Christoffer rounded out the scoring for Purdue. Halderman was 105th with a time of 17:47.5, while Christoffer was 123rd with a time of 17:56.9. Grace Lachmund was also under 18 minutes, while Kendall Hacker ran her first race of the season.

The women finished with a team score of 319.

On the men's side, Carpenter ran a 5-mile time of 24:25.4 in the loaded field. He was the third freshman to finish the race. Jeremy Craven was just behind Carpenter's 44th-place finish. Craven ran a time of 24:34.6 to finish 56th. Matthew Grider was third on the team and 78th overall with a time of 24:44.0. Ben Anderson and Ben Mohrdieck rounded out the scoring with times of 25:01.7 and 25:16.3, respectively.

The men's team finished 16th with 408 points.

Danny Dalton competed in the open race and finished 11th overall with a time of 25:42.5.
