OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Purdue shot an 11-over par 291 to sit in fourth place after 18 holes at the prestigious Olympia Fields Country Club / Fighting Illini Invitational.
Host Illinois leads Texas A&M (280) by five shots after the Illini shot a 6-under par 274. Oklahoma State is third at 7-over par 287, followed by Purdue (+11) in fourth. Baylor (+13), North Carolina (+14), Texas (+14), Indiana (+14), Florida State (+14), Northwestern (+15), Alabama (+16), USC (+16) and Indiana (+16) round out the top 10.
Of the 15 teams in the field, eight advanced to last year's NCAA Championships, while 12 of the squads were ranked in the top 32 of last year's Golfweek rankings. The event is being played at the prestigious Olympia Fields Country Club just outside Chicago. The course has hosted numerous USGA events, PGA Championships and the elite Western Open several times.
The Boilermakers managed just seven birdies on the day, but were second in the field in pars made (59). The Boilermakers were the only team without a double-bogey or worse on day one, but didn't record a birdie in their last 40 combined holes. The Boilermakers also led the field in par-5 scoring (-3).
However, Purdue boasted a consistent lineup through all five spots as its five-stroke margin between its five counting-team members was the best in the field.
Leading Purdue's contingent was senior Fernando Barco with a 1-over par 71, good for 12th place after 18 holes. Starting on the back nine, Barco birdied his first hole and was still 1-under par through six holes when back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 dropped him to 1-over par. He birdied his 10th hole (No. 1) to move back to even par, before another bogey on his 16th hole (No. 7) dropped him back over par.
Junior Brian Carlson followed with a 2-over par 72 to finish round one in a 16th-place tie. Carlson was 2-over par through seven holes, but birdied his eighth and 10th holes to get back to even par. He would bogey his 11th (No. 2) and 18th holes (No. 9) to fall back to 2-over par for his opening round.
Senior Austin Eoff and sophomore Jarle Volden are tied for 29th place after shooting identical 4-over par 74s. Eoff was 1-under par after birdieing his second hole (No. 11) and was still even par after 11 holes, before bogeying four of his final seven holes to fall off the pace.
Volden was 1-over par after 13 holes, but he would finish his round by bogeying three of his final five holes.
Sophomore Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 49th after shooting a 6-over par 76. Hildebrand, who led the team in birdies last weekend, had 12 pars and six bogeys during his round.
Round two tee times Saturday begin at 10 a.m. ET on Olympia Fields Country Club's North Course.
