National List of CSCAA's Scholar All-America Honorees
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Nineteen members of Purdue swimming & diving have been recognized as Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for excelling as student-athletes in both the pool and classroom.
All 19 Boilermakers honored were owners of 3.5 grade-point averages or better during the 2015-16 school year and/or cumulatively. Six of the 19 were recognized as full-fledged Scholar All-Americans for competing at the NCAA Championships. Thirteen others garnered Honorable Mention acclaim after posting an NCAA provisional qualifying "B Cut" time in at least one individual event.
Among that group of 11, Marat Amaltdinov passed on his opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships in order to train for the Russian Olympic Trials.
Six of the nine Purdue women to compete at NCAAs this year earned Scholar All-America honors. Sydney Couch, Allie Davis, Mary Beth Dunnichay, Emily Fogle, Grace Hernandez and Nika Karlina Petric all represented the Boilermakers at the national championship meet while maintaining 3.5-plus GPAs.
Because it's an Olympic year, the CSCAA also highlighted the Scholar All-Americans that qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. For Purdue, that list included Danny Conway, Alex Toetz, Joe Young, Davis, Dunnichay and Fogle. As graduating seniors, Conway and Dunnichay opted not to compete at their respective Olympic Trials after closing out their athletic careers during the 2015-16 school year.
Repeat honorees included Josh Brooks, Amaltdinov, Davis, Hernandez and Petric. Alex Clarke, Cady Farlow, Couch and Young were all recognized as freshmen.
Among Purdue's Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans, Jake Thomas, Amaltdinov, Clarke, Conway, Lim, Toetz and Young all had B Cuts in three different individual events. Meanwhile, Davis competed in four events at the NCAA Championships.
Eleven of the Boilermakers to receive CSCAA Scholar All-America honors are also slated to be recognized as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars later this summer.
USA Swimming's Olympic Team Trials begin Sunday in Omaha and continue through July 3.
