Ackerman Hills Renovation / Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex
John Purdue Club Scholarship Day
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A group of dignitaries and key contributors christened the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course at Purdue on Wednesday.
Purdue Board of Trustees chairman Michael Berghoff, vice chairman Tom Spurgeon, president Mitch Daniels, president emeritus Martin Jischke and athletics director Morgan Burke, took swings on the renovated course. They were joined by project contributors Lois Ackerman, John Ackerman, Barbara Ackerman Nicholoff, Jim Risk, Mark Andrews, Aaron Haehl, Richard Haehl, Gregg Hebbe and John Horner. Anna Appert Lund and Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri of the women's golf team along with Birck Boilermaker Golf Course superintendent Jim Scott and project manager Glenn Tompkins rounded out the group.
Purdue's historic Ackerman Hills Course, formerly the South Course, has been renovated under the direction of world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye and is almost ready to open.
On June 4, John Purdue Club members who are participating in John Purdue Club Scholarship Day will play the course. Soon after, the course will be open to the general public.
The renovation was conceived by alumnus Jim Ackerman and Purdue director of golf Devon Brouse, and was made possible by major gifts from the Ackerman family as well as Samuel R. Allen (a Purdue golf team member in the mid-1970s), Mike and Kay Birck, Fred Fehsenfeld, Richard Haehl, and Philip Haehl. Two other key members of the development team were Scott and contractor Chris Lutzke.
With approval from the Ackerman family, Purdue Athletics will request the course be renamed Ackerman-Allen Golf Course at an upcoming Board of Trustees meeting.
Upon reopening, the course will be included on the Pete Dye Trail, which presently consists of seven unique and challenging golf courses throughout Indiana, including Purdue's Kampen Course. The Kampen Course hosted the 2003 NCAA Women's Championships and the 2008 NCAA Men's Championships.
