INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team raced out to an outstanding start at the 2016 Big Ten Championships on Friday, shooting five-under, 283, to lead the field at The Fort Golf Resort. Junior August Kim and senior Anna Appert Lund led the way with scores of three-under, 69, and two-under, 70, respectively, and are both in the top-10 of the individual standings.
The Boilermakers' first-round score matches the 12th-best single-round team effort in school history, and their best 18-hole team score this season. The score is the second-best in school history at the conference championships, one shot off of a 282 second-round score in 2010. Purdue holds a one-shot lead on seventh-ranked Northwestern and is two shots ahead of Michigan.
Kim was very steady Friday, sinking four birdies on the day and not experiencing a bogey until the 14th hole. She made early moves with birdies on No. 3 and No. 6, and then got into tournament contention on No. 9 and No. 11 with two more birdies there. She slipped up with a bogey on the par 3, 14th, but made pars the rest of the way to sit tied for third place after 18 holes.
Appert Lund went back-and-forth on the day, but ended up with a team-best six birdies to post her third score of par or better in her last four rounds of play. After a bogey on the opening hole she immediately countered with a birdie and then added two more on No. 7 and No.8 to move to two-under. She stumbled with bogeys on No. 9 and No. 10, but rallied down the stretch by sinking birdies on No. 12, No. 16 and No. 17 to finish the day. The field had an unexpected rain delay with just one hole left for Appert Lund and the break bit her as she made bogey on the 18th to fall into a tie for ninth place in the individual standings.
Sophomore Marta Martin recovered from a slow start to shoot one-under, 71, and is tied for 17th in the individual standings. Martin had two bogeys in her first five holes, but rallied with consecutive birdies on No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8, and sank 10 straight pars to close her round.
Freshman Covadonga SanJuan secured the fourth and final team score of the afternoon, finishing at one-over, 73. The rookie played steady in her first conference championship round, making 13 pars on the day to go with a pair of birdies. The weather delay slowed SanJuan as well as Appert Lund as she made a birdie and two pars on No. 14, No. 15 and No. 16 before the break, and came home with a bogey on No. 17 and a par on No. 18.
Sophomore Linn Andersson and freshman Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri didn't register team scores for the Boilermakers on Friday, but both had bright spots to their rounds. Andersson had three straight birdies on No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10, and added a fourth birdie to her round on No. 13, but finished three-over, 75, for the day. Putri was six-over, 78, Friday, but finished well with birdies on No. 16 and No. 17.
Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell had a monster day to hold the individual lead, shooting seven-under, 65, and owns a two-shot edge on Rutgers' Emily Mills, who finished at five-under, 67. Kim is one of six players tied for third and Appert Lund is one of eight tied at ninth.
Play resumes tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. ET, but the Boilermakers are not scheduled to hit the course until 9:42 a.m., paired with Northwestern and Michigan.
