CLEARWATER, Fla. ââ'¬" The Boilermakers bats exploded for 16 runs on 21 hits in a pair of wins over College of Charleston and Seton Hall on Saturday. Purdue topped the Cougars 5-3 in the morning and the Pirates 11-2 in the afternoon to move to 11-7 on the season.
Senior Paris Andrew and Katie Harrison and junior Kristen Hoppman each tallied three hits to lead the team. Four other players tallied two hits apiece.
In the circle, senior Lilly Fecho and freshman Maddie Johnson combined for 12 strikeouts in the winning efforts.
The Boilermakers (11-7) wrap up their stay at the Under Armour Invitational with a 9 a.m. Sunday contest against St. Bonaventure.
Purdue 5, College of Charleston 1
The Boilermakers scored in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings in a 5-3 win over College of Charleston. Senior Paris Andrew tallied two of Purdue's nine hits in the game, while senior Lilly Fecho struck out eight in the victory.
Purdue scored its five runs on nine hits and an error, while allowing the Cougars three runs on eight hits and two errors.
An illegal pitch was called on a would-be pop up to open the game and leadoff batter Kristen Hoppman made the Cougars pay with a home run up the left field line two pitches later.
Senior Paris Andrew supplied another hard hit ball that landed inches from the top of the right field wall for a standup triple in the second, but the Boilers couldn't bring her home.
The Boilermakers paired a single and a stolen base by freshman Lauren Stewart and a single by freshman Heather Knight for a run in the fourth.
College of Charleston tied it up with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of singles and a fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two outs. The RBI double up the left field line appeared to be a foul ball, but was ruled fair and the Cougars rounded the bases, scoring the second run in a close play at the plate.
Purdue threatened in the fifth as senior CJ Parsons drew a leadoff walk and senior Sydney Pencek singled and the pair moved into scoring position on a Hoppman sacrifice. A fly ball to center looked to score one, but an online throw from the center fielder turned the double play to keep the game tied.
The Boilermakers took advantage of two free bases, a leadoff walk to freshman Mallory Baker, and a hit by pitch to Stewart, for a pair of runs in the sixth. Pinch runner Maya Hughes and Stewart moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Knight and Hughes scurried home on a wild pitch. A single to left center by Andrew brought Stewart in from third to put Purdue up 4-2.
Seniors Mary Gooding and Katie Harrison posted one-out singles in the seventh, setting the table for an RBI single by Baker. Stewart walked to fill the bases but a fly ball and grounder to first base prevented the Boilermakers from adding to the 5-2 edge.
The Cougars combined two singles and two errors with a ground out for one score, but a fly out and ground out cut the rally short and sewed up the Purdue win.
Purdue 11, Seton Hall 2
Ten Boilermakers tallied hits and the team tallied seven extra-base hits in an 11-2 win over Seton Hall in Game 2 of the day. Junior Kristen Hoppman and senior Katie Harrison led the way with two hits apiece, while freshman Maddie Damon struck out four in the win.
Purdue scored its 11 runs on 12 hits and two errors, while allowing Seton Hall two runs on eight hits and an error. Damon struck out four batters in six innings of work, while junior Katie Johnson threw the final stanza.
Hoppman led off the game with a bunt single, stole second and went to third on an infield grounder, before scoring on an illegal pitch. Harrison followed the score with a solo home run to left field to make it 2-0 just three batters into the game.
Freshman Heather Knight singled in the second and senior CJ Parsons doubled in the third, but Purdue couldn't add to its advantage.
Seton Hall put runners at the corner in third inning on an error and a single, but a caught foul kept them off the scoreboard.
The Boilermakers tacked on two more runs on two walks, a hit and an error in the fourth. Freshman Mallory Baker walked. Pinch runner Maya Hughes stole second before being joined on base by freshman Lauren Stewart, who walked, and Knight, who reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Senior Paris Andrew plated Hughes and Stewart with a double to left center. A would-be sacrifice fly ended in a double play at the plate, then a fly ball to right ended the inning.
The Pirates snapped the shutout with three hits in the fourth. A single and a steal set up an RBI double down the left field line. A single put runners at the corners, but Knight threw out a would-be base stealer to prevent further damage.
Purdue got the run back and one more with a trio of hits in the fifth. Harrison sent a two-out double to left center. Pinch runner Sydney Pencek hustled home on a Baker single up the middle. Baker then came home as Stewart tripled to the left center gap. A strikeout kept Stewart from coming home.
Seton Hall got a solo home run from Alexis Walkden in the sixth to cap its scoring. The Pirates also had a walk and a single in the inning, but stranded the runners.
The Boilermakers put the game out of reach with five runs on four hits and an error in the seventh. Hoppman led off with a triple to right center and scored on a Gooding double. Gooding then swiped third and Harrison walked. Pinch runner Morgan Cavinder stole second and Gooding scored as the pitcher committed an error trying to cut off the throw to second. Cavinder went to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by Baker. Stewart walked, stole second and went to third on a pinch hit single through the left side by sophomore Kaylah Hampton. After a pitching change, an all-hands-safe fielder's choice play at second base allowed Stewart to come home and put two aboard for pinch hitter Lexi Huffman, who picked up an RBI with a single down the left field line. A foul out left runners at second and third, but Purdue boasted an 11-2 advantage heading to the final stanza.
Johnson took over in the circle in the seventh and promptly forced a pair of ground outs. She then pitched over a single by forcing a fly ball to center field to cap the game.
