FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Boilermakers piled up nine runs on nine hits and two errors en route to a 9-2 win over FGCU and a tournament sweep.
Seven players tallied hits in the game, while junior Kristen Hoppman and freshman Mallory Baker led the Purdue bats with two hits apiece.
Sophomore Gina Snyder (2-1) earned the victory, striking out five batters and allowing just two hits in four and a third innings of relief work. Freshman Maddie Damon picked up one K in the starting effort. Ashley Dobson (3-5) was saddled with the loss for the Eagles, while Gabbeee Draney threw the final two and a third innings.
FGCU loaded the bases in the first inning on a hit by pitch, a walk and a single, but Damon issued two strikeouts to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Boilermakers filled the basepaths in the second and cashed in on a bases-clearing double by freshman Lexi Huffman. Freshman Mallory Baker led off with a sharp single to the pitcher. Freshman Lauren Stewart followed with a walk and senior CJ Parsons joined the pair with a one-out free pass.
The Eagles got a walk and a single in the second, but a pair of fly ball kept them off the scoreboard.
FGCU scored two runs after a trio of singles and a double to the left field wall in the third. Snyder took over in the circle and registered a strikeout to end the inning.
Purdue got one run back in the fourth, capitalizing on an error by the Eagles. Baker reached on the miscue. Pinch runner Maya Hughes then stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Stewart. Hughes beat out the throw home on a fielder's choice, which gave senior Paris Andrew the RBI.
A single and a steal by junior Kristen Hoppman set up an RBI single up the middle by senior Mary Gooding. A walk to Baker bumped Gooding to second, from which she scored on a Stewart single up the middle. A ground ball ended the inning with Purdue ahead 6-2.
After an hour and 55 minute lightning/rain delay, the Boilermakers forced a 1-2-3 inning on defense and then tacked on three runs on two hits in the sixth. Freshman Lexi Huffman drew a one-out walk and came home on a two-run bomb by sophomore Kaylah Hampton. Hoppman followed with a triple to right, then scored on a ground ball by Gooding.
Baker led off the seventh with a single, but a fielder's choice play saw pinch runner Sydney Pencek out at second, but put junior Katie Johnson aboard. Johnson went to third on a Paris Andrew single combined with a throwing error by the second baseman. Andrew stole second, but a pair of strikeouts left the pair stranded.
A fly out, a foul out and a strikeout wrapped up the win.
The Boilermakers (18-11) return to action at 4 p.m. Friday when they kick off Big Ten and home action against Minnesota.
