MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Tim Deal and Matthew Garrison competed in the decathlon and Caleb Fricke and Luke Lewis threw the hammer, as the Boilermakers opened the 2016 outdoor season Thursday. The Boilermakers are competing in the three-day Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational.
Garrison is competing in his first career decathlon. He opened with a time of 11.25 seconds in the 100-meter dash, which was the second-fastest time of the day. He earned 806 points for that effort. Garrison followed that up with his Purdue best in the long jump, indoors or out, with a leap of 7.15 meters (23-5.50) to earn 850 points. Garrison was the only competitor in the event to leap at least seven meters. After throwing 10.80m (35-5.25) in the shot put for 534 points, he cleared 2.00m (6-6.75) in the high jump, the best of the day, to earn 803 points. He rounded out his first day with a time of 49.92 seconds in the 400m dash to score 818 points and finish the day with 3,811, good for second through the first five events.
Deal is the leader in the decathlon after one day after posting the best mark in the competition in three of Thursday's five events. He ran a time of 11.03 seconds in his first career decathlon 100m dash. That time earned him 854 points. Deal followed that up with the second-best long jump mark in the competition, leaping 6.86m (22-6.00) to score 781 points. He then had the best shot put mark in the competition, recording a distance of 12.08m (39-7.75), which earned him 611 points. Deal cleared 1.91m (6-3.25) to score 723 points in the high jump. He wrapped the day up with a PR in the 400m dash, running a time of 48.78 seconds to earn 872 points. Deal leads after one day with 3,841 points.
In the hammer throw, Fricke finished 12th with a best mark of 50.32m (165-01), while Lewis did not record a mark.
