TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Boilermakers wrapped their stay at the Hillenbrand Invitational with a 6-1 win over North Texas on Sunday morning.
Senior Lilly Fecho (3-1) issued 11 strikeouts in the complete game effort, while recording her third win of the weekend. Stacey Underwood (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Mean Green after allowing four runs in the first three stanzas.
Purdue managed its six runs on six hits and an error, while allowing North Texas a run on five hits and an error. Junior Kristen Hoppman led the Boilermaker bats with a 2-for-3 effort.
The Boilermakers scored four quick runs in the second inning after loading the bases on a walk to Mallory Baker, a hit by pitch to Emily Kenny and a single by Kaylah Hampton. Freshman Lauren Stewart plated two runs with a seeing-eye single to shallow right. She wound up at second after a fielding error and came home along with Hampton on a Mary Gooding double to left center.
North Texas threatened in the sixth, loading the bases on a single, a fielder's choice and an error, but Fecho averted the crisis by tacking on two more K's to her tally.
Purdue upped its advantage to 6-0 with a pair of run in the bottom of the inning. Baker and Hoppman combined back to back doubles for the first run. Hoppman came home from third on a sacrifice fly by Hampton later in the inning.
The Mean Green snapped the shutout bid with one out in the seventh as Harley Perella lifted a solo home run to right.
The Boilermakers (3-2) return to action on Friday when they open the Big Ten/ACC Challenge against Syracuse.
