MINNEAPOLIS - The Purdue women's golf team emerged victorious in its first tournament of the year, winning the Minnesota Invitational at the Minikahda Club on Tuesday. The Boilermakers shot 10-over, 298, on the final day, holding off a pair of challengers to take home their first tournament title since the 2014 Butler Invitational, while sophomore Linn Andersson was Purdue's top individual, placing third with a score of one-under par, 215.
The Boilermakers put together a balanced team effort on Tuesday as Andersson and freshman Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri each shot two-over, 74, while senior Anna Appert Lund and sophomore Marta Martin each carded scores of three-over, 75. The foursome did the bulk of their work on the back nine, shooting a combined score of two-over, led by Martin's trio of birdies and one-under score down the stretch. Putri put the stamp on the victory with a birdie on No. 1 as the shotgun start had her finishing on the opening hole.
Purdue's three-round total of 20-over, 287-299-298=884, bested second-place East Carolina by two strokes (886, +22), and came in three shots ahead of Big Ten foe Illinois (887, +23). Minnesota boasted the individual medalist as Celia Kuenster finished three-under par, 68-72-73=213, followed closely by F. Gstafsson Spang of East Carolina (213, -2) and Andersson (215, -1). Appert Lund joined Andersson in the top-10, tied for 10th at seven-over par, 223, while Kim and Putri both finished in the top-20, tied for 13th and 20th, respectively.
