Daily Recaps from Big Tens: Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Eight new program records and at least one scoring finish in every individual event but one highlighted the 2015 Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
The eight new records featured four individual overall benchmarks, two relay standards and two all-time bests by freshmen. The Boilermakers set new records in the 200 and 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. The new freshman marks were in the 200 and 500 free.
Fifteen Purdue athletes scored at Big Tens this year as Purdue finished fifth with 388 team points. The Boilermakers finished two spots higher in the team standings than last year after having two additional athletes score.
Nika Karlina Petric was part of two new program records. The junior eclipsed teammate Francesca Marr's Purdue benchmark in the 400 IM in the Friday prelims with a time of 4:13.97. She also swam the third leg on the 800 free relay team Wednesday evening that lowered the program record by more than 3 ½ seconds while finishing in 7:03.15.
Rhiannon Sheets led off the 800 free relay with a split of 1:45.16, establishing a new team benchmark in the 200 free. Abby Jagdfeld and Allie Davis also contributed to the new relay record. The quartet posted an NCAA A Cut qualifying time, guaranteeing they'll have a chance to compete in the event at the national championship meet as long as one Boilermaker qualifies individually, which is expected to happen.
Jagdfeld broke her own freshman record in the 200 free (1:46.22) Friday while racing in the A final of the event. Alex Todd also eclipsed a record she already owned entering the week. The senior lowered her Purdue benchmark in the 100 fly to 53.24 and also qualified for the A final of the event.
Kaersten Meitz broke the program record in the 500 free in the prelims and then became Purdue's overall record holder in the event with a time of 4:42.11 in the evening finals.
Diver Mary Beth Dunnichay was the Boilers' top individual scorer with 43 team points, the best individual total since Emily Fogle's 48 points in 2012. She qualified for the championship final in all three diving events and finished fourth on both the 3-meter and platforms. MacKenzie Tweardy scored in all three diving events for the third year in a row and finished second on the team with 34 points. Her third-place showing in the championship final of platform diving was the top individual finish of the week for Purdue.
Among the swimmers, Sheets (30 points), Allie Davis (19) and Hannah Manger (16) also scored in three individual events. Davis won the B final of the 200 free and freshman Emmy Rawson was victorious in the B final of the 200 fly.
Fogle (26 points) qualified for the A final of both individual events in which she competed, proving she remains one of the top breaststroke swimmers in the conference after missing most of the last two seasons due to injuries. Sheets and Tweardy joined Dunnichay and Fogle as Boilers to qualify for at least two A finals.
As is customary this time of year, Purdue produced a major overhaul of its all-time Top 10 lists. Manger improved on her second-fastest times in program history in the backstroke events and moved up to third place in the 200 IM. Davis posted career-best times in the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 free and now ranks among the top five in all four events.
Sheets, Davis, Marr and Todd all posted career-high team point totals. Sheets remains the Boilers' active career scoring leader at Big Tens with 111.5 points. Tweardy (109) and Fogle (102) also surpassed the century mark in career scoring at Big Tens.
The NCAA will announce the full list of swimming qualifiers for the women's national championship meet next week (March 3 or 4). The three-day, six-session meet will be held in Greensboro, N.C., this season. The divers will need to punch their tickets via the annual Zone C Championships, set for March 12-14 in Columbus.
The Boilermakers are scheduled to host the annual Boiler-Make-It NCAA Last Chance time trials meet Saturday at noon.
