Kapitany Clinches 4-2 Win for No. 40 Boilermakers

Jan. 24, 2015

CLEMSON, S.C. - Krisztina Kapitany's 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles position clinched the first win of the season for the 40th-ranked Purdue women's tennis team, 4-2 over No. 42 (tie) Washington Saturday as a part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend while playing on the courts of the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The second-seeded Boilermakers will take on the winner of top-seeded and 14th-ranked Clemson (0-0) and fourth-seeded and 66th-ranked Winthrop (0-1) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET to battle for a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Live scoring will be available on ClemsonTigers.com and updates will also be provided on Twitter via @ClemsonWTennis.

Although the Huskies claimed the first doubles match, a 6-2 decision from Julija Lukac and Grace Ysidora over Lynda Xepoleas and Andjela Djokovic at No. 3, Purdue went on to win the two that mattered most.

Juniors Deborah Suarez and Krisztina Kapitany got past Washington's Anga Chen and Miki Kobayashi with ease, 6-3, to take their season record to 5-1. Daniela Vidal and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum were pushed to the breaker against Elianne Douglas-Miro and Riko Shimizu and emerged with their fifth win of the young season, 7-6 (6).

The Old Gold & Black pushed out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 straight-setter from Bernard-Feigenbaum (4-0) over Ysidora in the No. 2 spot. Washington responded and evened the score at 2-2 with wins at Nos. 3 and 4. Kobayashi dealt Suarez a 6-3, 6-3 setback and her teammate, Lukac, denied Djokovic, 6-4, 6-4.

Vidal followed with her second upset early in the season, knocking off 90th-ranked Douglas-Miro in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The 118th-ranked senior for the Boilermakers defeated No. 93 Patricia Lancranjan of DePaul during the season-opening weekend at the Purdue Invite. Vidal improved to 4-0 with the victory and gave her team a 3-2 advantage, setting the stage for Kapitany.

The ITA Kick-Off Weekend features 60 women's teams competing across the country for berths to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, to be hosted in February by the University of Virginia at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
