WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 48th-ranked Purdue men's tennis team will begin its 2015 spring campaign by hosting Eastern Illinois and IUPUI Monday on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers will first take on Eastern Illinois at 12 p.m. ET and then face off against IUPUI at 5 p.m.
For the eighth time in 15 years, Purdue begins the season in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) team rankings, checking in at No. 48. It's the highest start to a season since the beginning of the 2003 spring campaign when the Boilermakers were listed at No. 43. Additionally, sophomore Ricky Medinilla has been tabbed as the 84th-ranked singles player. His ranking is the second of his career after being listed 96th to open his rookie campaign in 2014. Neither Eastern Illinois nor IUPUI are ranked or have ranked players.
IUPUI will have two dual matches under its belt come Monday. The Jaguars open their season Friday night when they host Cleveland State and follow with Dayton on Saturday. Like Purdue, it will be the season opener for Eastern Illinois.
The Old Gold & Black have a combined 5-0 record against the Jaguars and Panthers, outscoring both teams 31-4. Both series were started within the last five years and all five dual matches have taken place on the Basham Courts. In their last meeting on Feb. 15, 2014, the Boilermakers cruised past IUPUI, 6-1. It has been four years since Purdue has taken on Eastern Illinois, but on Feb. 12, 2011, it was a 7-0 shutout for the Boilermakers.
Live scoring will be available and updates will be posted on @PurdueMT.
