Dive-by-Dive Scoring vs. Michigan State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Coming off springboard diving sweeps in the dual meet with Michigan State to kick off the spring semester portion of the schedule, Purdue's Steele Johnson and Mary Beth Dunnichay have been recognized as the Big Ten Divers of the Week.

Johnson was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for fourth time this season.

Johnson's Purdue season-best 1-meter score of 395.40 highlighted Friday's action. The freshman moved up to third place in program history on 1-meter and now ranks among the top three in all three diving events in the record book. He actually posted a higher score on 1-meter than 3-meter (393.38) after rallying with strong scores on his final two dives on 3-meter to overtake teammate Alec Back (389.55), who finished second in both events.

Dunnichay (275.78) also finished strong to hold off teammate MacKenzie Tweardy (274.43) on 1-meter. Samm Reese took third to give the Purdue women a 1-2-3 finish in the event. Dunnichay's winning score on 3-meter was 322.88 after she recorded the top-scoring dive in three of the six rounds.

Johnson soared past the rest of the 1-meter field, winning the event by 74.8 points over the second-place finisher Back. Each of Johnson's 1-meter dives carried at least a 3.0 degree of difficulty and he averaged a score of 65.9 per dive.

Johnson leads the Purdue men with nine individual event victories this season, while Dunnichay is second for the women with seven. They also swept the Big Ten Diver of the Week awards for the Boilermakers Oct. 21 after their performances over the season-opening weekend. Additionally, Dunnichay was Diver of the Week Nov. 4. Johnson was also Diver of the Week Nov. 11 and Nov. 25, as well as Freshman of the Week Oct. 21, Oct. 28 and Dec. 23.

Purdue is back action Saturday, Jan. 24 when it hosts rival Indiana for an 11 a.m. dual at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The divers will compete from the 1-meter and 10-meter platform as is customary for the annual dual with the Hoosiers.
