A CLOSER LOOK AT PURDUE'S PROBABLE LINEUP
- The Boilermakers made a few changes to their probable lineup from their the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals. Two grapplers continue to be listed at 125 and 149 pounds, while only one is listed at 133, 174 and 184.
- Purdue's probable lineup has a dual record of 37-23. Through six duals, the Boilermakers have posted 25 decisions, six pins, three major decisions, two technical falls and have received one forfeit.
- Four different lineups have been used through six duals.
- Danny Sabatello leads the way with a 6-0 mark in dual action and has scored 24 points for the Boilermakers. Sabatello has claimed victory in 16 of his 20 dual matches over the past two seasons. Not only is he riding an 11-match winning streak, he has won his last eight dual matches dating back to a 10-6 upset of eighth-ranked Steven Rodrigues of Illinois on Feb. 7, 2014.
- Eight of Purdue's probables have gone up against SIU Edwardsville at least once in the last three meetings. That group is 13-0 against the Cougars with five falls and three major decisions.
- Danny Sabatello and Alex Griffin will be looking for their second dual victories in as many meetings with SIU Edwardsville's Patrick Meyers and Karsten Van Velsor, respectively. Sabatello recorded a 7-2 decision of Meyers at 133 pounds as a redshirt freshman in 2012. In last year's dual, Griffin built a 5-1 lead before pinning the Cougar in 3:12.
- The fastest pin of Braden Atwood's career came against Chris Johnson last season. Atwood needed just 21 seconds for the fall. Johnson is slated to go at 285 Saturday. Atwood has defeated each Cougar he has faced for a 3-0 mark.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
- SIU Edwardsville has been out of dual action since Nov. 15 when the Cougars posted a 1-4 mark at the Eastern Michigan Duals. They defeated Clarion (19-12) and dropped the next three to Lock Haven (24-12), Eastern Michigan (22-18) and Ohio (28-9).
- Eight of the 11 probables listed for Saturday's dual were last in action at the Joe Parisi Open (11/22). Two of the seven competitors in the Gold Division placed, with Jake Residori taking fourth at 174 pounds and Chris Johnson winning the 285-pound fifth-place match.
- The Cougars look to their upper weights to score dual points in Connor McMahon (165), Jake Residori (174) and Derek Nagel (184). They are the only grapplers in the probable lineup that sport winning overall and dual records for head coach Jeremy Spates. McMahon and Residori are 5-2, while Nagel is 4-2.
- Bonus points have been few and far between with the probable lineup registering two tech falls, five major decisions and six falls. Nagel has a pair of falls and majors, Residori has pinned two opponents and Patrick Myers has scored two majors at 133 pounds.
- Residori has a 1-1 record against opposition from Purdue. Pat Robinson decisioned Residori, 5-2, at 165 pounds in the 2012 dual, but the Cougar dealt Andy Hoselton an 8-3 setback at 174 pounds last season.
RANKINGS NOTES
- For a second straight week, Purdue is receiving votes in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll. The Boilermakers have been receiving votes in the last five editions of the poll dating back to Feb. 10, 2014. They last appeared at No. 24 in the Feb. 3, 2014, poll.
- Eleven of Purdue's 18 dual opponents, seven of which are B1G opponents, are currently ranked or receiving votes. The Boilermakers are currently 1-2 against ranked teams. Last year eight of the 14 teams faced were ranked.
- Braden Atwood has been ranked by InterMat for 45 consecutive weeks dating back to Oct. 28, 2012. The redshirt senior has spent the last three weeks at No. 8, the highest ranking of his career, on InterMat's 197-pound list. Atwood's loss to unranked John Eblen of Missouri at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals is reflected in four outlets, slipping out of Amateur Wrestling News' and Gregg Henry's top 10. He maintains a top-10 spot on W.I.N. Magazine, ASICS Flowrestling and TheOpenMat.com's rankings.
- After another big upset, Danny Sabatello has entered two more polls this week: Amateur Wrestling News (No. 18) and TheOpenMat.com (No. 14). He held steady in the ASICS Flowrestling and W.I.N. Magazine rankings, while jumping five spots on Gregg Henry's list. The only outlet that hasn't recognized him yet this season is InterMat. InterMat dropped Missouri's Matt Manley from No. 12 to 16 after Sabatello beat him at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals, 7-4.
- For the first time in his career, Nick Lawrence is ranked by InterMat, making his debut this week at No. 20.
- Eight Boilermakers have appeared at least once in one of the six polls this season.
- Polls monitored, a complete list of recognized Boilermakers and their movement the past two weeks can be found on page 3 of the dual notes.
