WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Brett Haan and Kyle Van Hoeck teamed up to for nine innings of one-run, walk-free ball to lead the Gold Team to a 4-1 victory in game two of Purdue baseball's Black and Gold Series Monday afternoon at Alexander Field.

Haan struck out six, including four in the fourth inning, while giving up just one run over five innings. Van Hoeck retired 11 of the 14 batters he faced, striking out four, over four innings of relief. Together they helped give the Gold Team a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Offensively, the Gold Team scored a single run in four of the first five innings. Jack Picchiotti recorded an extra-base hit in each of his first two at-bats and later walked twice. Kyle Johnson delivered a two-out RBI double after Picchiotti tripled off the bottom of the wall in right center in the third inning, and Johnson drove in another run later with a sacrifice fly.

James Jewell connected for a solo home run into the left field bullpen for the Gold Team in the fourth inning, already the fourth home run to left in the series. He also drew two free passes on the day.

Drew Rosbottom scored twice for the Gold Team after reaching base safely to begin the first and fifth innings. He also threw out Ted Snidanko at second base from left field when Snidanko tried to take second on a ball that got through Tyler Beck at third base.

Hayden Grant and Snidanko made the standout defensive plays of the day. Grant handled an in-between hop and turned a 6-3 double play to finish off the second inning. Snidanko made a diving catch going toward the left field line to take away a hit from Daniel Sander to open the bottom of the eighth.

Haan struck out four and surrendered two hits in top of the fourth. Jeff Evak led off with a single, stole second and took third when Picchiotti's throw went into center field. Haan struck out the next three batters, but Kyle Wood reached when strike three got away from Picchiotti. The Gold Team argued that the pitch had hit Wood as he swung and missed, asking for it to be called a dead ball. Instead, Evak scored on the play and the inning continued. Brett Carlson followed with a double to left field, the Black Team's lone extra-base hit of the day.

With the tying run at the plate and two outs in the eighth inning, the Black Team put both runners in motion. Picchiotti wisely threw behind the play and cut down Evan Kennedy at second base for the third out. Earlier in the day, Picchiotti had been thrown out at home trying to score from third on a double steal.

Carlson and Kennedy each had a pair of hits for the Black Team. Mike Kornacker was 1-for-3 at the plate and also pitched two hitless innings of relief.

Matt Gibbs found himself in a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the fifth, but only allowed one run to score. A line drive double play to shortstop brought the inning to an end after Johnson's sacrifice fly.

Picchiotti doubled into the right field corner to plate Rosbottom and open the scoring in the bottom of the first.

Game three of the series is set for Tuesday at 3 p.m.
