TULSA, Okla. - Ricky Medinilla and Diego Acosta were eliminated from the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Tuesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Medinilla bowed out in the second round of Qualifying Singles, while he and Acosta were bounced in the second round of Qualifying Doubles.
During the afternoon in singles action, Medinilla squared off against Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer. The two took turns shutting the other out to force a decisive third set. The 110th-ranked Cardinal got the best of the unranked Purdue sophomore in the first set, 6-0, and Medinilla exchanged the score in the second. Each game went back and forth in the third set, pushing the battle into a breaker. Stiefelmeyer took the edge and the match, 7-6 (3), to force an early exit from the tournament for Medinilla.
Play shifted to the 64-team Qualifying Doubles draw, featuring the 41st-preseason ranked Boilermaker duo of Medinilla and Acosta. In a first-round matchup, the pair took the first set from Cal's Filip Bergevi and Oskar Wikberg in the breaker, 7-6 (4). They closed out the match with a 6-3 second set for the victory.
Medinilla and Acosta were tested in their second round battle, but were unable to come out on the winning end against Brett Clark and Oystein Steiro of North Carolina, 6-1, 7-6, 10-6. The Purdue doubles team was also forced to exit from the tournament with the loss.
