Medinilla Wins Opening Battle in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. - Purdue men's tennis player Ricky Medinilla won his opening match of the Qualifying Singles Draw at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The sophomore advances to the second round Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. ET.

The unranked Boilermaker hailing from Mexico City, Mexico, took the first set from No. 74 Mac Styslinger of Virginia, 6-4. Styslinger answered with a 6-2 performance in the second set to even the match at one apiece. The decisive set was a back and forth battle, but Medinilla emerged on top, 6-4, to take the three-set victory.

In Tuesday's round of 64, Medinilla will take on Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer. The 110th-ranked Cardinal moved past No. 123 Ace Matias in the first round, 6-1, 6-2.

Sixteen individuals from the Qualifying Draw will advance into the 64-player Main Draw that will be contested Oct. 2-6.

Medinilla and Diego Acosta, the ITA's 41st-preseason ranked duo, are one of 128 pairs in the Qualifying Doubles Draw. Four teams will advance into the 32-team Main Draw. At the time of publication, the Qualifying Doubles Draw had yet to be posted.
