Men's Tennis Falls in Pre-Qualifying Matches

Sept. 27, 2014 TULSA, Okla. - Diego Acosta and Mateus Silva were upended in the first round of the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Pre-Qualifying Draw Saturday. Acosta was in action at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center while Silva played at Union High School.

The event has Pre-Qualifying, Qualifying and Main Draws for singles and Qualifying and Main Draws for doubles. The University of Tulsa is the host of the tournament that runs through Oct. 6.

Acosta fell in straight sets to Jacob Wilson Jacob Wilson of Illinois State, 6-2, 6-3. Silva took the first set from Memphis' Andrew Watson, 6-4. Watson then etched out a 7-6 (3) win in the second set and followed with a 6-4 outing in the decisive set. Both Boilermakers bow out of the tournament with their losses.

It isn't the end for Purdue at the event. Sophomore Ricky Medinilla was selected for a spot in the 128-player Qualifying Draw set to get underway on Monday. Sixteen individuals from the Qualifying Draw will advance into the 64-player Main Draw that will be contested Oct. 2-6.

Medinilla and Acosta, the ITA's 41st-preseason ranked duo, are one of 128 pairs in the Qualifying Doubles Draw. Four teams will advance into the 32-team Main Draw.
