Forty-three Student-Athletes Receive Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Forty-three Purdue student-athletes were announced by the Big Ten Conference as Distinguished Scholar Award recipients Wednesday. Six Boilermakers were acknowledged for carrying a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) in 2013-14.

Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.

In all, 684 student-athletes earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award and 101 maintained a 4.0 GPA. The list includes student-athletes from every institution and 37 different sports who have recorded a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.

The conference also recognizes Academic All-Big Ten team members for the fall, winter and spring sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten honors, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. For the 2013-14 school year, the Boilermakers garnered 186 Academic All-Big Ten awards.
