MINNEAPOLIS -- Casey Matthews' conference title in 1-meter diving and three new program records highlighted the 2014 Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
Matthews won the first Big Ten title for the Purdue women since 2009. She was named the co-Diver of the Championships after also finishing as the runner-up in the championship final of 3-meter diving en route to being the Boilers' top individual scorer (37 points). She joined Carrie McCambridge (2004 and 2006) Ashley Karnes (2009) as Purdue women to take home Diver of the Championships honors.
Alex Todd and Kylie Vogel each broke the program record in the 100 butterfly. Todd finished the meet as the new Purdue record holder (53.39) after Vogel initially set a new mark (53.49) in the preliminaries. Both juniors eclipsed classmate Rhiannon Sheets' record from the 2011-12 season.
Hannah Manger established a new team freshman record in the 100 backstroke (54.73), a mark that doubled as the second-fastest time in program history.
Matthews also set a new program record in 1-meter diving, breaking Karnes' mark from her 2009 Big Ten champion season. Matthews now owns Purdue records from the 1- and 3-meter springboards.
Purdue's top showing in the relay events came on the opening night of Big Tens. The 800 free relay team of Carly Mercer, Allie Davis, Nika Karlina Petric and Sheets posted an NCAA A cut qualifying time while posting the second-fastest time (7:07.01) in program history. As long as the Boilers qualify one individual for the NCAA Championships, the 800 free relay team should also get a chance to swim at the national championship meet.
The NCAA will announce the full list of swimming qualifiers for the women's national championship meet next week (March 4 or 5). The three-day, six-session meet will also be hosted by the University of Minnesota this year. The divers will need to punch their tickets via the annual Zone C Championships, set for March 13-15 in Columbus.
Overall, 13 individuals scored team points for the Boilermakers at the seven-session Big Ten Championships.
Purdue dominated the springboard diving events at Big Tens this year. The Boilermakers had four of the top five finishers from the 1-meter board and three of the top six from the 3-meter board. Mary Beth Dunnichay (32 points) enjoyed her finest meet as a Boilermaker. The 2008 Olympian took third from both springboards despite not competing very frequently from the 3-meter board this season. After being the team's top individual scorer at the 2013 Big Tens, MacKenzie Tweardy (33) scored in all three diving events for the second year in a row.
Sheets (23 points) and Petric (23) shared top individual scorer honors among the Purdue swimmers. Sheets qualified for a pair of A finals, swimming in the championship races of the 200 free and 200 fly. Carly Mercer (50, 100 and 200 free) joined Petric (400 IM, 500 and 1650 free) and Tweardy as Boilers to score in three different events.
Mercer and Vogel gave Purdue a victorious sweep of the B finals of the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints. Francesca Marr's sixth-place showing in the A final of the 200 breast was the top individual finish among the Boilers' swimmers. Purdue had four swimmers score in the 200 free.
In addition to the aforementioned new records, numerous Boilers moved up or joined the program's all-time Top 10 lists at Big Tens, including: Michelle Cabassol (1-meter diving), Meagan Lim (100 fly and 200 IM), Lizzy Lyon (200 and 500 free), Carly Marshall (50 free), Madison Montiero (400 IM), Trish Regan (100 and 200 back), Davis (200 and 500 free), Dunnichay (1- and 3-meter diving), Manger (200 back), Marr (100 and 200 breast), Petric (400 IM, 500 and 1650 free), Tweardy (1-meter diving) and Vogel (100 fly, 50 and 100 free).
Purdue's relay teams also moved up to second (800 free), third (400 medley), fourth (200 free) and fifth place (400 free) in program history. Mercer was part of all three freestyle relays and Vogel was also a contributor to three of the four.
The Boilermakers are scheduled to host the annual Boiler-Make-It NCAA Last Chance time trials meet Saturday, March 1, at noon.
