Bradley Adds Talented Newcomer For 2014 Spring Season

Feb. 7, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue men's golf head coach Rob Bradley has announced that newcomer Fernando Barco has enrolled in school and will compete as a freshman during the 2014 spring season.

Barco, a Lima, Peru, native, has been ranked as high as No. 142 in the latest World Golf Amateur rankings. He finished 15th in the prestigious American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Thunderbird Invitational in Arizona in May 2013. He fired an opening-round 66 in the event, the lowest 18-hole score in the tournament that features the top junior golfers in the world.

Barco also competed in both the 2012 and 2013 Peru Opens.

Barco graduated a semester early from Colegia Santa Maria (Peru) and of the 141 players ranked ahead of him when he reached his ranking of No. 142, only five of them are Class of 2014 recruits. Five others are Class of 2015 or 2016 recruits, making Barco the 11th-ranked high school recruit in the world at the time.

Entering the spring season, the Boilermakers are off to a 50-12-3 head-to-head record and a No. 42 ranking in the most-recent NCAA / Golfweek national rankings. Barco will see his first action of his career this weekend at the Purdue Alumni Match to be played Saturday and Sunday at the Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, Fla.
