Cross Country Teams Capture Crown At IPFW Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's cross country teams dominated the IPFW Invitational as both teams took the top spot in their second meet of the season.

The Boilermaker men had the 8K race's top five finishers and eight of the top 10. Charles White was first to cross the finish line with a time of 25:27.63. Stephen Schulz was a close second finishing just 0.16 seconds after White with a time of 25:27.79. Cale Allen and Scott Lasiter finished third and fourth with times of 25:42.07 and 25:43.39, respectively. Ladd Mercer took home fifth place for Purdue.

On the women's side, Dana Payonk won in just her second race as a Boilermaker with a 5K time of 18:35.62. Stephanie Bonk finished second by a hair as she trailed Payonk by just 0.03 seconds and completed the race in 18:35.65. Jennifer Hall and Kara Conflenti finished third and fourth overall with times of 18:35.81 and 18:36.70, respectively. Kelly McCurdy, Dani Sullivan, and Blair Doney took home sixth, seventh, and eighth overall to secure the dominant win for the women.

Saturday's top finish was the first of the season for both teams in just the second race of the 2011 campaign.

The Purdue harriers return to action on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Indiana Intercollegiates in Bloomington, Ind. The start times for both the men and women have yet to be determined.
