WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - With two full innings in the books, the rains came down and washed out the remainder of the Wednesday softball doubleheader between Purdue and Northwestern. The teams waited for two hours, but the rain never subsided, forcing the cancellation.
Purdue continues Big Ten play on Saturday, when it faces off with Penn State at 5 p.m. in University Park. The Boilermakers and Nittany Lions wrap that series at noon Sunday when the rematch airs live on the Big Ten Network. Frank Giardini and Jennie Ritter will have the call.
The Wildcats put a runner on in the first and second, with a walk and a single, but could not advance her around.
Sophomore Erika Petruzzi gave Purdue its first base runner with a leadoff walk in the second. A fielder's choice put Rzegocki aboard, but saw Petruzzi out at second. The Boilermakers were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Three pitches into the third, the umpires instituted a rain delay and the field was tarped.
