COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes clinched their sixth consecutive Big Ten Championship with a 7-0 win over the No. 63 Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Ohio State (27-2, 10-0 Big Ten) was dominant from the beginning of doubles play. Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa finished first with an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Mark Kovacs and Aaron Dujovne. Balazs Novak and Ille Van Engelen clinched the doubles point for the Buckeyes with a win over Eric Ramos and Krisztian Krocsko at No. 2, 8-2. The 11th-ranked doubles team of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Pawel Poziomski and Szymon Tatarczyk at No. 1.
Purdue (12-12, 3-7) was only able to win one set in singles play. Dujovne took a set lead over No. 96 Van Engelen with a 6-3 win at No. 3, but dropped the second, 0-6, and the third set tiebreaker, 10-6.
Buchanan, the 12th-ranked player nationally, gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kovacs at No. 2. Allare, the 45th-ranked individual, pushed the lead to 3-0 with a win over Krocsko at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3. Rola, the 6th-ranked individual, clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tatarczyk at No. 1. Devin McCarthy, ranked No. 66 in the country, then took down Poziomski at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1. No. 89 Novak topped Ramos at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3. Van Engelen completed the 7-0 sweep with his victory over Dujovne at No. 3.
The match concluded regular season play for the Boilermakers. Purdue will next play in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. Official pairings will be announced later in the week.
