ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Purdue women's basketball team lost 64-63 at Michigan in the final game of the regular season.
The Boilermakers held an 11-point advantage at the half 33-22, but struggled to score to start the second period, managing only a made free throw by Sam Ostarello until Jodi Howell hit a three-pointer at the 13:40 mark to bring the score to 37-32.
Michigan freshman Dayeesha Hollins did not play in the first period, but finished the game with nine points on 3 of 3 shooting. She also was pivotal in helping Michigan pick up its defense and helped force Purdue into 12 second-half turnovers. The Wolverines took their first lead of the second half with 6:31 to play and led by as much as seven points with 1:01 to play.
Howell tied her career-high by hitting 7 of 9 three-pointers, including four in the final 56 seconds to spur a furious comeback by Purdue that fell one point short. Howell finished the game with 21 points and four rebounds. Brittany Rayburn scored 13 points and Sam Ostarello contributed 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
It was the first meeting of the year between the two teams.
The Boilermakers have earned a No. 5 seed in the Big Ten Tournament that runs March 4 to 7 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Purdue will play No. 4 seed Wisconsin at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5. Fans also can purchase tickets by online or by calling Ticketmaster. The Boilermakers have won a conference-record seven Big Ten Tournament titles and have played in 11 of 15 championship games.
