IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa jumped out to a 19-1 lead in the first seven and a half minutes of the game which proved to be too large a deficit to overcome as the Boilermakers fall 70-50 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday.
Purdue cut the lead to 13 points at the half and was able to get within eight points, 38-30 with 13:45 to play, but the Hawkeyes responded with a 10-1 run to push the lead back to double-digits.
The Boilermakers were led by Brittany Rayburn's 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the floor while Jodi Howell contributed 10 points. KK Houser pulled down a career- and team-high eight rebounds and point guard FahKara Malone collected seven caroms, but Purdue was outrebounded 49-35 and gave up 17 offensive boards.
Purdue had its worst free throw performance of the year connecting on 10 of 24 from the charity stripe for just 41.7 percent.
Five players for Iowa scored in double-figures and two of the five also tallied double-digit rebounds. Kachine Alexander recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds while freshman Morgan Johnson had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jaime Printy scored 12 points, Kamille Wahlin contributed 11 points and Gabby Machado recorded 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Boilermakers are back in action when they play host to Illinois on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Mackey Arena. It is Service Appreciation Night and members of the armed forces, fire fighters and police officers are eligible for a ticket voucher for free admission.
