Purdue Earns Eight Wins On First Day Of Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team completed the first day of the Purdue Invitational on Friday at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

Sophomore Jennifer Rabot grabbed her fifth singles win of the fall with a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Marquette's Olga Fischer. Junior Bhavani Tirumurti followed suit with a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Kelly Barry from Marquette. Sophomore Anna Dushkina picked up the team's third singles victory when Marquette's Rachael Hush retired in the first set with Dushkina holding a 5-0 lead.

Senior Michelle Sammons pushed her match to three sets but ultimately fell as Marquette's Paola Calderon earned a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory. Sophomore Kay Kay Magi was defeated by Christina Ruiz from Marquette, who took a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Fellow sophomore Remi Martin was bested by Gillian Hush from Marquette 6-1, 6-1.

The Purdue doubles teams put together a 5-1 record on the day. Sammons and Rabot beat Rachael Hush and Ruiz 8-5 before taking down Whitney Wilson and Amy Barton from Michigan State 8-2. Magi and Tirumurti also won two contests. The duo defeated Gillian Hush and Wilson 8-3 and a tandem duo of Barry and Michigan State's Christine Miliken 8-1. Dushkina and Martin dropped a 9-7 decision to Calderon and Fischer before bouncing back with a 9-7 victory over Michigan State's Nicole Herzog and Elena Ivanova.

The Purdue Invitational continues Saturday. Competition begins on the Basham Courts inside the Schwartz Tennis Center at 9 a.m. ET.
