No. 6 Purdue In Second Place

AUSTIN, Texas - The sixth-ranked Purdue women's golf team moved into second place after firing a six-over par 294 in the second round of the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas. The Boilermakers trail No. 2 UCLA, the top-seeded team in the regional by six strokes. TCU is in third place at nine-over par (585).

There are 21 teams and three individual golfers competing in each regional. The top eight team finishers and top two individuals not playing on the eight qualifying teams will earn bids to compete at the 2008 NCAA Championships which takes place Tuesday-Friday, May 20 to 23 in Albuquerque, N.M., at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The Central Regional concludes with the final round of play on Saturday, May 10 at the University of Texas Golf Course, a par-72, 6,301 yard venue.

The Boilermakers had the second-lowest round of the day with a 294, for a two-day total of 582. Junior Maria Hernandez is in third place after firing a 73 on Friday to go with her opening round 66 (-5, 139). She is just two strokes out of first place. Junior Christel Boeljon is tied for 13th with a two-round total of 146, after carding a 75 in the second round.

Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta had the biggest turnaround from one round to the next for Purdue, moving into at tie for 23rd after recording a 71 on Friday. Gulyanamitta carded a 78 on Thursday and has a 149 total. Freshman Maude-Aimee Leblanc is just one stroke behind at 150, but tied for 32nd after firing a second consecutive 75 in the tournament. Junior Stephanie Oukeo is tied for 78th, recording an 83 in the second round after opening with a 76.

The Central Regional individual leader through two rounds is TCU sophomore Valentine Derrey. Derry, third after the first round, sits atop the leader board after posting a two-day total of a seven-under 137. Derry had a two-under 70 on Friday, tying for the lowest round of the day, which complemented her five-under 67 first-round score.
