COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Purdue men's and women's track and field teams got off to a solid start at the first day of the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State University Friday night.

Sophomore Jonathan Pullum took home fifth place in the men's discus, topping out at 54.74 meters (179-07). He was the top Big Ten placer in the event and remains the conference leader with his mark. Freshman Billy Hardcastle and Senior Tyler Miller finished 21st and 24th in the discus, marking 47.86 meters (157-00) and 46.79 meters (153-06).

Sophomore Kristin Phillips and freshman Kristina Krasich came home 13th and 14th, respectively in the women's 1,500-meter run, crossing the line in 4:37.58 and 4:38.61. Rookie Matt De Silva completed the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Boilermakers, finishing 24th in 9:21.32.

Action resumes tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. with a series of field events, including the women's long jump, men's hammer throw and women's high jump.
