ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Purdue wrestling team opened its Big Ten Dual season with a hard-fought 24-12 loss at sixth-ranked Michigan on Friday. Michigan improved to 14-3 with the win, while the Boilermakers fell to 8-3.
Purdue took home three of the ten matches on the night as junior Jake Patacsil, sophomore Chris Kasten and freshman Logan Brown each scored victories. As the match started at 197 pounds, Brown picked up an injury default victory over No. 14 Anthony Biondo to open up a 6-0 Purdue lead. In a very close match, Brown scored a second-period takedown on Biondo and aggravated an elbow injury suffered in the first period by Biondo as he tried to turn the Michigan wrestler. Having used all of his injury time in the first period, Biondo was forced to default and award Brown his first career Big Ten victory.
Kasten followed in similar fashion, using a 3-1 decision to score his first career conference win. In another close match, Kasten used a late takedown to secure the win and stretch the Boilermakers' edge to 9-0.
As the match returned to the top of the lineup, the Wolverines slowly began to climb out of the hole. Narrow victories at 125 and 133 pounds pulled Michigan within three and then a major decision by third-ranked Kellen Russell at 141 pounds gave Michigan its first lead of the match.
Patacsil snatched the lead right back from the Maize and Blue, posting a 7-0 shutout win over Justin Chrzanowski at 149 pounds. Patacsil scored a pair of takedowns in the match and spent nearly the whole match on the top side, rolling up nearly six minutes of riding time. However, Chrzanowski spend most of the match flat on his stomach and was hit with a pair of stalling penalties, but refused to surrender any back points to Patacsil and left the Boilermakers with only a three-point decision.
Another battle ensued at 157 pounds between Purdue's Sam Patacsil and Michigan's Jeff Marsh. The match was tight the whole way and ended in dramatic fashion as the pair fell into a scramble in the closing seconds, but Sam Patacsil was unable to come out on top in time, and Marsh's riding time rewarded him with a 5-3 victory.
The Wolverines never looked back as No. 3 Eric Tannenbaum, fourth-ranked Steve Luke and No. 2 Tyrel Todd notched respective wins at 165, 174 and 184 pounds to close out the match.
Purdue looks to bounce back on Sunday, heading to East Lansing, Mich. to face the Michigan State University Spartans. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (EST).
