KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Second round play was suspended at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Kissimmee, Fla., due to darkness on Sunday. Tenth-ranked Purdue was the only team to finish the second round, defeating Big Ten foe Michigan State, 3-2-0. The No. 4 seed Boilermakers were matched up with the 12th-seeded Spartans after falling to No. 13 seed Texas A&M, 3-2-0 in the first round.
The Boilermakers three victories against Michigan State came from two freshmen and a junior. Freshman Maude-Aimee Leblanc won her second match of the day by defeating Jen Domagalski, 5 and 4. Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta picked up a 3 and 2 victory over Jordyn Wells and Purdue junior Stephanie Oukeo delivered a 6 and 5 win over the Spartans' Michelle Bowles.
Michigan State's Aimee Neff was able to defeat Purdue's Maria Hernandez, 4 and 3. Junior Christel Boeljon conceded to Laura Kueny, who was leading 2 and 1, because Purdue had secured the team match.
In the opening round, Purdue won two of five matches. Boeljon earned a 5 and 4 win over Texas A&M's Danielle McVeigh and LeBlanc needed only 11 holes to defeat Sara Hemingway, 7 and 6.
Hernandez, dropped her match to Texas A&M's Lauren Johnson, 1-up. Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta lost to the Aggies' Sarah Zwartynski 2-up and junior Stephanie Oukeo was bested by Ashley Freeman, 3 and 2.
Top-seeded Duke won its opening round match at the Hooters Match Play. The higher seeds won 5 of 8 matches.
The Blue Devils, who defeated TCU 4-1-0 face Oklahoma State who defeated Denver 3-2-0. The No. 2 seed Florida swept Louisville, 5-0-0 and will face Alabama in a SEC match up. Alabama defeated Vanderbilt 4-1-0. No. 3 seed Auburn beat South Carolina 4-0-1 and in another SEC confrontation will face off against the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs who snuck by New Mexico in a tiebreaker. Tennessee and Texas A&M play against each other in the second round.
The Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship is a modified double-elimination event being held at the Ginn Reunion Resort's Independence Course. Invitation to the tournament was based on 2007 NCAA Championships finish.
Second round play will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning and the third round is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 a.m.
