WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University sophomore Katie Morrical came within four seconds of breaking the Purdue Varsity Cross Country Course 5K record as the Boilermakers' men's and women's cross country teams posted solid showings at the Great American Legends race on Friday. Freshman Nick Arensmann led the men's effort in a non-scoring dual with Miami (Ohio).

Morrical's time of 18:02.00 was just shy of the 5K course mark set by Lindsay Zinn in 2004. Fellow sophomore Kristin Phillips recorded the fourth fastest time in the course's history, crossing the line second in 18:10.00, while first-year Kristina Krasich notched a time of 18:31.00 in her first collegiate 5K race. Rounding out the Boilermaker women's' top five were senior Danielle Ginther in 18:54.00 and rookie Erin Ragouzis in 19:24.00.

On the men's side, Arensmann paced the Boilermakers with a time of 27:03.00 in his first collegiate 8K race. Junior Steve Swank followed with a time of 27:09.00, while freshman Alex Folk, Chase Kaufman and Matt Clifford rounded out the top five for Purdue.

Pat Sovacool led Miami and finished first overall with a time of 25:20.00.

Both the Purdue men and women will face their first big test of the season next Friday as the Boilermakers host nearly every school in the state for the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships. The day will start at 3:30 p.m. with the men's and women's combined open race.
