ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Purdue women's golf team improved its team score by 10 strokes in the second round, firing a 288 on Tuesday, and moved into fifth place with one day to go in the Margaret Moses Branch NCAA Fall Preview in Albuquerque, N.M.
Duke retained the lead with a team total of 573 (-11), Southern California is second at minus-seven (577), Arizona State is third with a score of 582 (-2) and UCLA leads the Boilermakers by one stroke with a total score of 585 (+1).
Junior Maria Hernandez is tied for fourth and is five-under for the tournament after carding a 70 (-3) in the second round. Hernandez is tied with the nation's top-ranked player, Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Liebelei Lawrence of Vanderbilt, with a two-round total of 141. Southern California's Dewi Claire Schreefel is in first place with a two-round score of 137 (-9).
Purdue's Christel Boeljon carded the low score for the Boilermakers on Tuesday with a four-under par 69. She is tied for 10th, at three-under overall.
Freshman Maude-Aimee Leblanc bettered her first round mark by eight strokes by firing a three-under 70 in the second round. She is tied for 26th with a two-day total of 148 (+2). Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta carded a second-round 79 and is tied for 61st and Stephanie Oukeo had an 87 in the second round.
The 54-hole event, with 18 holes played each day, runs Sept. 24 to 26 at the UNM Championship Golf Course, a par-73, 6,069-yard venue. The NCAA Preview presents the only chance for teams outside the Mountain West Conference to play the course before the NCAA Championships on May 20 to 23.
The field features the top-12 finishers from last year's NCAA Championships, host New Mexico, and additional institutions currently ranked in the top-10 in the Golfweek or golfstat.com polls. Competing are Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, BYU, Duke, Georgia, Louisville, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Purdue, Southern California, Stanford, TCU, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, UCLA and UNLV.
