ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Purdue women's golf team is in a three-way tie for eighth place after the first round of the Margaret Moses Branch NCAA Fall Preview in Albuquerque, N.M. The seventh-ranked Boilermakers were led by Maria Hernandez's two-under par 71.
Top-ranked Duke is in first place with a team total of 287 (-5), just 11 strokes ahead of Purdue. The Boilermakers are tied with Arizona and Auburn with a score of 298.
Hernandez recorded the only below-par round for the Boilermakers on Monday and is tied for ninth. Junior Christel Boeljon is tied for 23rd after firing a one-over 74.
Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta carded a 75 and is tied for 36th place. Fellow freshman Maude-Aimee Leblanc is tied for 60th with a 78 and Stephanie Oukeo scored an 83 and is in 88th place.
Taylore Karle is alone in first place as an individual after firing a blistering 67 (-6) in the first round. Only 15 of the 93 players shot below-par on Monday and only two teams, Duke and UCLA managed team scores below-par.
The 54-hole event, with 18 holes played each day, is Sept. 24 to 26 at the UNM Championship Golf Course, a par-73, 6,069-yard venue. The NCAA Preview presents the only chance for teams outside the Mountain West Conference to play the course before the NCAA Championships on May 20 to 23.
The field features the top-12 finishers from last year's NCAA Championships, host New Mexico, and additional institutions currently ranked in the top-10 in the Golfweek or golfstat.com polls. Competing are Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, BYU, Duke, Georgia, Louisville, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Purdue, Southern California, Stanford, TCU, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, UCLA and UNLV.
Second round tee times begin at 8 a.m. Mountain on Tuesday and the tournament concludes with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Results and live scoring from the NCAA Preview can be obtained at GolftStat.com. A full recap and results of each round will be posted at PurdueSports.com.
