DAVIS, Calif. - The Boilermaker offense managed just one hit amid 15 strikeouts in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader with UC Davis. The Aggies won the game 3-1.
The Boilermakers got a base runner in the opening stanza, as freshman Ashley Barr (Meridian, Idaho) drew a one-out walk. Barr then advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded by a pair of strikeouts.
The Aggies tallied the game's first hit with a triple to lead off the bottom of the inning, but the Boilermaker defense held strong, keeping UCD off the scoreboard.
Purdue loaded the bases in the second inning on a pair of walks and an error. Senior DaQueta Johnson (Ontario, Calif.) walked. Freshman Jenna Alexander (Rancho Murieta, Calif.) put down a sacrifice but reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, pushing Johnson to third on the play. Alexander stole second, then freshman Kelsey Haupert filled the hole at first on a walk. Junior Ashley Hall (Noblesville, Ind.) drew a two-out walk to put the Boilermakers on the scoreboard. Another strikeout left the bases full at inning's end.
UC Davis matched Purdue's score with a run on two hits and an error in the home half of the second. Mandi Salcido led off with a triple to center field, then scored on a throwing error by the right fielder following a fly out.
The Boilermakers stranded one in the third. The Aggies, however, made good on a hit and an error in the bottom of the stanza, taking the lead with a pair of runs. Julie Stauder reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, before scoring on a two-out home run to center by Salcido.
Alexander and sophomore Christina Trauger (Santa Rosa, Calif.) reached via walk in the fourth. Trauger and pinch runner Amy Butcher (Decatur, Ind.) advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, but were unable to score.
A single and two sacrifices gave UCD a runner on third in the bottom of the inning, but again the Boilermakers held.
Barr singled to third base to lead off the fifth, snapping Lindsay Tognetti's bid for a no-hitter, but it was to no avail.
Purdue managed one run on one hit and one Aggie error, while UC Davis put up three runs on six hits and three Boilermaker miscues.
Tognetti (8-3) struck out 15 in the complete game victory, while sophomore Ashley DiDomenico (Youngstown, Ohio) and senior Brooke Baker (Schererville, Ind.) combined for two strikeouts. DiDomenico was charged with the loss after pitching the opening three stanzas.
The Boilermakers (7-21) return to action at 3 p.m. (PST) when they take on the Saint Mary's Gaels in Moraga, Calif.
