FRESNO, Calif. - A sixth-inning double gave Fresno State a 3-2 win over the Boilermaker softball team Tuesday night. The Boilermakers continue their spring break trip to California with a Wednesday double header against UC Davis.
Fresno State broke a scoreless tie with a run on a hit and a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Jenna Cervantez tallied the game's first hit with a lead-off double to deep right field. A ground ball moved her to third, before the sacrifice fly brought her home.
Sophomore Katie Mitchell (Crown Point, Ind.) evened the score with a single swing in the fifth, launching a solo home run over the fence in left field to start the stanza.
Purdue took the lead with a run on a hit, a wild pitch and an error in the sixth. Senior DaQueta Johnson (Ontario, Calif.) started things off with a pinch hit double to right center. She went to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Ashley Barr (Meridian, Idaho) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, allowing Johnson to score. Barr was called out trying to advance to second on the play.
With runners at first and third in the bottom of the sixth, Nichole Willis doubled to right center, scoring both and putting the Bulldogs back on top 3-2.
Mitchell kept hope alive for the Boilermakers with a one-out single through the right side in the seventh. A sacrifice moved her into scoring position, but a pop up sealed the Fresno State win.
Purdue scored two runs on three hits and an error, while Fresno State managed three runs on four hits and an error. Mitchell led the Boilermaker offense with a 2-for-3 effort.
Robin Mackin (14-6) earned the complete game victory, while sophomore Ashley DiDomenico (Youngstown, Ohio) tossed the complete game for the Boilermakers.
Purdue returns to action on Wednesday when the team takes on UC Davis in a 1 p.m. (PST) double header.
