WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 19 Purdue (9-2-2, 2-1 Big Ten) suffered a 2-0 loss at Michigan (5-4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) Friday night at the U-M soccer complex. Wolverine goals were scored by Melissa Dobbyn in the ninth minute and Sarah Banco in the 76th.
Purdue's loss was its first in more than a month, snapping a program-best 10-match unbeaten streak (8-0-2). The Boilermakers' last defeat was at home on Aug. 27 to San Diego State, 4-0. With tonight's loss, Purdue remains winless in Ann Arbor at 0-3-1.
"We got beat," said head coach Rob Klatte. "In a contest where you didn't want to finish second in anything, we came in second throughout the night. Michigan came out fired up, they worked incredibly hard on defense and we struggled to establish any kind of rhythm."
Purdue was outshot 15-6 with Michigan placing five of its shots on goal. Jill Sarbaugh and Sylvia Forbes led the Boilermakers with two shots each.
The Boilermakers' best scoring chance occurred with 20 minutes left in the match and the score favoring U-M, 1-0. Parrissa Eyorokon got out wide and placed a service that Forbes headed off the crossbar.
The Wolverines added insurance minutes later with Katie Miler placing a perfect service to Banco who was standing two yards back of the goal line. Miler came down the right side, got the ball over the leg of a Purdue defender, and Banco simply volleyed it into the upper right corner.
Michigan's first score was a result of a miscue by goalkeeper Lauren Mason, a type of mistake Klatte said he hadn't seen her make in four years as a Boilermaker. After receiving the ball from Banco, Dobbyn took the ball along the endline and shot the ball across the face of the net. Mason made a diving attempt but read the angle wrong as the ball slipped into the back side.
The Boilermakers look to rebound from their loss Sunday when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., to battle the Michigan State Spartans (4-5-1, 0-2 Big Ten). The match kicks off at 3 p.m. and can been seen live on the Comcast Local cable network or on tape delay via Comcast SportsNet Chicago, which will air the contest Sunday at 8 p.m. EST.
Comcast SportsNet Chicago can be found on Insight Cable's channel 65, which is widely available in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area.
Michigan State lost to Indiana at home Friday afternoon, 1-0, on a Carrie DeFreece goal early in the second half.
