WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team fell 5-2 at No. 36 Michigan on Saturday. The loss dropped the 43rd-ranked Boilermakers to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines improved to 10-6 and 4-2 with the victory, which avenged a 6-1 loss to Purdue last spring.
Michigan took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point, thanks to victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Purdue's No. 2 team of sophomore Stephanie Wooten and freshman Randi Schuler won 8-5 at No. 2 after the point already was decided.
The Wolverines ran up their lead to 3-0 before Schuler, ranked 66th, recorded a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over 118th-ranked Kara Delicata at No. 1 singles. The Wolverines clinched the victory with the next match to come off, as Chisako Sugiyama defeated freshman Anna Dzeva 6-0, 7-6.
After the outcome was decided, freshman Mallory Voelker added a Purdue win at No. 3, as she came back from a set down to beat Nina Yaftali 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Purdue will play at Michigan State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
