WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The weather was warm but the revenge was served cold, as the Purdue women's tennis team defeated Western Michigan 5-2 at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon. The Boilermakers, ranked 43rd, lost 4-3 to the unranked Broncos last season in Kalamazoo.

Purdue got down to business early by claiming the first point of the match in doubles. Sophomore Brooke Beier and freshman Mallory Voelker teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1 over Malena Remynse and Carrie Jeanmaire. Sophomore Stephanie Wooten and freshman Randi Schuler followed that with an 8-3 defeat of Rattiya Hiranrat and Noriko Saruta at No. 2.

With wins at No. 1 from Schuler, No. 2 from Beier, and No. 3 from Voelker, the Boilermakers took the overall match. All three won in straight sets, with Beier coming through with the match-clincher over Jeanmaire at the No. 2 spot.

Adding the fifth point with a win at No. 4 singles was Wooten, who beat Hiranrat 6-2, 6-6 (6).

The win improved Purdue's record to 9-6 (3-1 Big Ten), while the loss dropped the Broncos to 13-5. Western Michigan, which saw its four-match win streak snapped with Wednesday's defeat, currently sits atop the Mid-American Conference standings with a perfect 4-0 record.

Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo said he was happy with his team's play, considering the short layoff from its last match.

"It seems like just yesterday we were playing Notre Dame, so we didn't have much turnaround time. But I thought we played really hard and really well against a very good Western Michigan team," Iandolo said. "We play them every year, and every year it is a great challenge."

Purdue, which wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 6-5 record, will have a couple more challenges this weekend, when it travels to Michigan and Michigan State for Saturday and Sunday matches.
