WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Northwestern proved too tough for the Purdue women's tennis team, as the 11th-ranked Wildcats beat the 47th-ranked Boilermakers 4-0 in a Big Ten Championships semifinal match Saturday in Champaign, Ill.
Northwestern, which earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament after going 10-0 against league competition in the regular season, started the match by winning the doubles point; the Wildcats won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Northwestern entered the singles portion of the match needing three victories to claim the overall match against the fifth-seeded Boilermakers. The Wildcats delivered, with wins at No. 6, No. 1 and No. 2, in order. The remaining matches were abandoned once the team outcome was in hand.
Winners of the last seven Big Ten titles, Northwestern improved to 19-4 with the win, while Purdue dropped to 13-10. The semifinal appearance was the third for the Boilermakers, who now will await an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The tournament field will be announced the second week of May.
