WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team came up on the short end of a 5-2 score at Iowa on Saturday. The loss dropped the Boilermakers' record to 11-9 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten, while the victory improved the Hakweyes to 16-4 and 8-1.
Iowa, ranked 30th and off to its best start since 1990, found itself against the ropes early, as 46th-ranked Purdue secured the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. Despite losing at No. 3 doubles, the Boilermakers bounced back with victories at No. 2 and No. 1. Winning the former were sophomore Stephanie Wooten and freshman Randi Schuler, who beat Hillary Mintz and Kayla Berry 8-4. In the top slot, sophomore Brooke Beier and freshman Mallory Voelker teamed for an 8-5 victory over Meg Racette and Jacqueline Lee.
Purdue was unable to continue its success in singles. Iowa rattled off four straight wins at Nos. 6, 2, 1 and 3 to score the four points needed for the team victory. The Hawkeyes added a fifth point with a win at No. 4. Purdue freshman Anna Dzeva was the lone Boilermaker to win in singles; she defeated Krissy Dowlin 7-6 (6), 6-3 at No. 5.
Purdue will look to regroup Sunday, when it plays at Minnesota. The match is scheduled to get under way at 11 a.m.
